First Read Win. This was such a good book. I read it within a day. That's when I know I will love the book. It was well written and there were a few things that could have made it better, but other then the few things I didn't like I would recommend this to anyone.

Lady of the Shadows (#1 Shadow and Water series)- Belinda M. Weikel
Momma taught me to blend in; appear human. The more human we tried to be, the less stress we had from the Hunters. We avoided unwanted attention by following a strict set of personal rules. Unfortunately, Momma had been gone for several years now. She just never came home one night; I was thirteen years old when it happened. Soon, I would be breaking the most fundamental rule she had ever taught me; don’t ever do anything that will get you noticed.
My name is Althea, and I am an Immortal living among Mortals. I know being half Demon is not exactly a ringing endorsement on my behalf, but it does have its benefits, as well as its drawbacks. Being that I was also half Fairy might sound better, but it is not. Fey can be just as evil as any Demon; sometimes much worse. The time for running and hiding from those hunting me has ended, and the time to stand up and fight back has begun.

Celeste’s review: I really enjoyed Lady of the Shadows! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I dove right into the book and couldn’t stop turning the pages! We find out right away that Althea is half demon and half fey, which is a very unusual combination, one that makes her hunted. The only way for her to survive is to hide, and the best way to do that is among humans. Several years earlier Althea’s mother just disappeared and never came home, so Althea has been moving around for years, just keeping her head down, trying to survive. Her time being anonymous is soon over, and that is where this story gets going.
Althea comes into contact with Grant and Delynn, also not humans, and they claim to have information about her mother. Before she is convinced to go with them, there is a large battle that changes things…forever. We soon learn more about Althea and why she might be hunted. We even get some mythology intertwined with the fae and the demons and I loved it! Althea finally meets people (outcasts) like herself and realized she is not alone. This book is the story of her journey to remain safe and all the relationships she makes along the way.
One treat I absolutely loved was the description of Rolland’s Kingdom. I got such a fabulous visual of exactly how it should look and I could truly imagine myself there. While I know the residents was being deprived of certain things, the fact that he lived in a castle in a tree and there were birdcage cage elevators…what a gorgeous image for me. What followed in his kingdom was fabulous, as Althea used her talent of the shadows. I didn’t expect it, and loved what happened!
Now for Tassos. RAWR. he is just one piece of MAN. Tall, and I mean tall! muscular, and a fighter. Unf, unf, unf. While this book was mostly about rescuing Althea’s mother and keeping Althea safe, there was definitely a brewing romance and a scene that was quite steamy *fans self*. I am looking forward to seeing how their relationship grows even more in the next book
The story had more than one “bad guy”, and after one battle, there was another looming. Some enemies turn out to be allies…though all the details weren’t given…..yet. The ending tied up nicely as there was no massive cliffhanger and this book could be a stand alone novel, but I am more than excited for another installment now that I know many of the characters and the storyline has been established. My only criticism of this book was the amount of typos. There were not a ridiculous amount, but enough that might annoy many people. It certainly didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book, and a great editor would be able to catch them. All in all I would absolutely recommend Lady of the Shadows!

This was an engrossing and interesting read. The lead character, Althea, has unusual powers and is a heroine you can like right from the start. The world that the author, Weikel, has created leaves for all sorts of wonderful future stories! The Guardian idea is intriguing. Using all manner of creatures and beings, good and bad, there is something going on all the time. The arrival of Tassos, a mega-male who is "all that" plus some, is a great addition to an already fascinating story! Although there were some minor errors with words being missing or repeated, they numbered few and didn't detract from my involvement with the story. If it weren't for the super-heated chemistry between Althea and Tassos and a particularly "hot" scene between them, I'd say that this story would be a great fit for teens and young adult. However, since it does include that delicious hotness I mentioned and some violence, it could not be categorized for that sort of crowd. But as I fall into neither of those categories and enjoyed it too, then I guess this book ought to attract readers of all ages! The heroine is young and shows it on occasion and that is why I think the older sect might not embrace this book wholeheartedly. It will be interesting to see this character mature over time. So, over all, I'd say this book offers an interesting world with fascinating characters and intriguing set-ups for future books! Brava to Weikel for writing a great story and inventing a world one could easily get lost in. Highly recommend for those who like dark fantasy with some romance, lots of action, plot twists and turns, a heroine to root for and an over-the-top supporting cast to keep it all interesting and engaging!
(Thank you so much Deborah)
